Who was Alphonse Mucha?

Best known for his ornate theatrical posters, Alfons Maria Mucha (24 July 1860 - 14 July 1939) was born in Moravia, now in the Czech Republic. During his time, drawing papers was considered a luxury in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire. But his early inclination towards painting and his talent impressed a local merchant who supplied Alphonse Mucha with paper for free! During his initial years, Mucha drew exclusively with his left hand. His abilities were not only restricted to painting; music was also his forte! He could play the violin and was an alto singer.

After completing his compulsory education, he wanted to study more, but his family could not bear the cost. So his music teacher sent him to the choirmaster of St. Thomas’s Abbey in Brno so that the monastery could admit Mucha to the choir and fund his studies. Though the choirmaster- Pavel Křížkovský, was impressed by his talents, for unfortunate circumstances, could not support him. He was finally accepted as a chorister by the choirmaster at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, due to which he could complete his secondary education.

Though his musical talents ensured his musical education, Alphonse Mucha dreamed of becoming an artist. But his artistic career did not have a smooth start. In 1878, the Academy of Fine Art in Prague rejected him and advised him to look for a different career path. Three years later, he was employed as an apprentice scenery painter for a Vienna company that made sets for the Vienna theatres.

During his stay in Vienna, Mucha explored many museums, churches, palaces, and even theatres, where he came in contact with the grand murals, portraits, and historical paintings of Hans Makart. One can trace Makart’s influence in Mucha’s later works. During this time, Mucha also started experimenting with photography, and it went on to play a significant role in his later works.

In 1881, a terrible fire destroyed the Ring theater, due to which Alphonse was almost out of funds. He then travelled back to southern Moravia, where he made portraits and decorative art and lettering for tombstones. This brought him recognition and Count Eduard Khuen Belasi- a nobleman, commissioned him to paint murals for the Emmahof Castle and Gandegg Caste.
